1) Carrots make you see in the dark.

Rumour is that during WWII the British Ministry of Information pushed the ‘pilots powered by carrots’ story as a cover-up for their implementation of new radar technology during night-time air battles. Carrots are still a good source of beta-carotene for making Vitamin A however. And Vitamin A deficiency can affect the cornea dramatically – with blindness as a result.

2) More colour equals more nutrition.

Cynics may scoff but trying to ‘eat a rainbow’ in fruit and vegetables is an easy maxim for a healthy diet. While it may not be the perfect approach to judging a vegetable’s worth anything that gets people thinking about the benefits is ok with us.

3) Spinach makes you strong like Popeye.

A 2010 study revealed that children increased their vegetable consumption after watching Popeye cartoons. The names are great too, with villainous Bluto, sweetheart Olive Oil and baby Swee’Pea.

4) Frozen is not as good as fresh.

Yes, many snap-frozen vegetables contain the same nutrients and health benefits as fresh ones. But the taste of fresh produce is still better and, if the option is available, we’d much rather people savoured the flavour.
